Halfbiking through some Construction

The city is finally improving the broadband infrastructure on 17th. They picked a hot humid day to do it but 17th is so little traveled save for Frothy Monkey parking that I had the road nearly — but for the workers — all to myself.

I’m continually surprised by the differences between Biking Fixed and Halfbiking. While I know that Halfbiking — since I can’t sit — has improved my Fixie Climbing I’m still surprised at how differently effortful is Halfbiking up moderately steep hills in Shelby Hills. Since there is no Frame Stiffness through which to transfer one’s effort bodily via grip-strength & torque & body-swaying, the power inevitably comes from single-leg squatting on the pedals & which angle you take with reference to the ground or to the angle of the ground.

It’s a Torah.

She’s a wonderful punitive mistress

Caught in a bit of rain

The forecast said No Rain so I suppose I’m gullible. Oddly enough only the back part of the bike path suffered any rain at all. Up near the baseball fields there was no rain at all. I’ve never had that happen before.

I got an early start so the path was nearly empty. A few rented e-bikes and runners sweating to podcasts plus one small snake I had to dodge.

The path to 30 in the park requires many loops

Out in some wind

I’m still on 17 teeth in the back so I’m not afraid of some wind. 30 mph gusts are a No Go but I left early enough to avoid those. A few in the 20s tho; fortunately not always when going up-hill.

Passed 2 dudes also on Fixies who noted my Fixie as well. Good not to be alone.

A fine time

Halfbike in the wind

I avoided the gusts in the 30s with a 10:30 start but even then it was very breezy out there. Traffic was light because there is no lunch joint that far up 16th and the elementary school had not let-out yet.

I finally figured-out that by dropping g my center of gravity & leaning slightly back I can make sharper turns; I had to avoid a car so this was the lesson I learned.

I altered the standard route & added the hill up 17th

Jeanne Dèce is always a fun ride

Avoiding the Rain

Plus there some new variety of pollen out there set on ruining me. At any rate I stayed inside and took Echo on an 11 mile meander. I watched some canned Giro during so I felt especially slow. I’m one minute 20 seconds behind Aurora.

Some good-looking plateaus

Halfbiking

I took Jeanne Dèce out in some wind and had a fine time. There was a Movie- or Video-Shoot on Woodland so I got some fine curious look & interaction with Showbiz Folk. Some heard the word Halfbike for the first time & I hope they searched the word & bought one. The more the merrier.

Always a good workout; you can’t sit ever
Road Crews are the sweaty-end of Showbiz

A bit of AirBike

I had to burn my morning in Spring Hill so I did a late 20 miler on Echo. The amount of effort Echo requires that Aurora did not always amazes me. I’m about half a mile behind were I was on Aurora & twice as tired. Rogue Echo is a good resistance machine

Always an education

Halfbike in some Wind

Late afternoon winds were steady in the teens with gusts up near 30 so I tried to get out there before 2. Oddly almost no traffic until the grammar school let-out near 3, which caused me to take a decent detour. Halfbikes don’t dodge very well.

I had a good ride — 11 miles in 63 minutes — and the humidity was low enough that I didn’t need a Veo Strip. My usual bone-conducting headphones tho needed charging so I went with a bargain pair I keep just in case. It’s important to be able to hear what’s behind you so Apple Pods set on Adaptive will work but they are expensive and one bad bump is all it wd take to lose them.

Fairly typical Halfbike heart rate

Never a bad ride on a Halfbike; everything is a steep learning-curve

31 again

It’s been a long time since I stretched a ride over 30 miles but today was the day for it. Not too windy but the sad Davidson detour ruined my easy exit so I up & overed it past Vinny Links. Basement Squats work.

Surprisingly not many cyclists today and those out there were on e-bikes both owned & rented. I’m hoping this isn’t our future.

Very little chasing yet I passed 12 or so

Insta360 cameras produce what some call Teletubby Images but I’m thinking Popeye. It’s the extreme wide-angle lens

Some Halfbiking

I met a kid once who said my Halfbike looked like a cross between a Bike & a Scooter. I suggested the mane Booter but he won by saying Skike. Skike is a better name because it’s really nothing at all like a Bike

Takes a while to learn to ride

I wanted to go for a regular 10 mile ride but my fatigue plus the wind reduced me to 8 miles in about 45 minutes.

I like the Shelby Hills pattern

About 80° out there but the humidity was on the low side.

Here’s how a gentle uphill turn looks
